Edmund Hillary
Signed Photo of Hillary and Tenzing - 1953
Original matte photograph by John Topham, capturing the historic moment when Hillary and Tenzing returned to base camp after summiting Mount Everest, in background. The photo is printed on Kodak Professional A4 paper (11.6H x 8.2W), is in near-mint condition and has been boldly signed by Sir Edmund in black Sharpie. Very slight crease just above the signed “y” would not be noticeable once framed.
Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953 at the age of 33, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt.
Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of the Himalayas.
