SIR ARTHUR JOHN GIELGUD (1904-2000) was an English actor/director/producer, considered by many to be the greatest Classical actor of the twentieth century, particularly known for his warm and expressive voice, which his colleague Sir Alec Guinness likened to “a silver trumpet muffled in silk”. Gielgud is the only Briton on the short list of entertainers who have been awarded an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
