Julia Child
Signed Olive Wood Spoon - 1995

Holding this spoon and considering this remarkable woman’s influence in the world of food reminds us of a delightful passage in Laura Shapiro’s biography, Julia Child (Penguin, 2009):
“… She could look at any given recipe as if she were an everyday home cook with a penchant for disaster. Discussion of scrambled eggs started with the detailed scrutiny of the proper pan, then considered several methods of beating the eggs and compared the merits of a whisk versus a wooden spoon, then specified the exact shape of the wooden spoon…and finally proceeded carefully through the cooking, with instructions on how to avoid crises and how to undertake rescues as necessary. She did all this in a voice so calm and cheerful that whatever she was describing sounded perfectly within the reach of any attentive cook.”
JULIA CHILD (1912-2004) was a famous American cook, author, spy, and television personality, who introduced French cuisine and cooking techniques to the American mainstream, through her many cookbooks and television programs. Her most famous works are the 1961 cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and, showcasing her sui generis television persona, the series The French Chef, which premiered in 1963.
