Morris Hirschfield Limited Edition Signed - 1976
A sumptuously produced, limited edition monograph (#791/3000) on the Russian-American artist Morris Hirshfield, an immigrant who had achieved financial success in manufacturing in the United States but turned to painting only late in life. A self-taught artist, Hirshfield’s work is in the folk tradition. Sidney Janis, the New York gallery owner, recounts Hirshfield’s life and work; the author William Saroyan adds a lengthy interview of the artist; and a final essay by Bihalji Merin.
High quality reproductions of Hirshfield’s paintings tipped in on full pages, opposite the text; published by Ricci in a limited edition of 3000 numbered copies (this one #791), and signed by Ricci on the colophon. Bound in black silk with gilt titles, and a large color reproduction on the front board, gilt title on the spine, and printed on hand-made Fabriano papers. In black cloth slipcase. 141 pp. In fine, unmarked condition.
