Scarce ink signature, “Byron,” on a brown slip of paper presumably clipped from a letter. Archivally conserved in a carved, gilded frame featuring a beautiful, full-color vintage engraving of Lord Byron and a plaque with the opening lines of his Spenserian stanza Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage. The presentation is completed with hand-marbled Italian paper borders and a stunning moire fabric overmat, glazed with the finest quality museum glass. 

LORD GEORGE GORDON BYRON (1788-1824) . Highly influential British poet, politician, soldier, and adventurer (1788-1824), sexual and otherwise, who takes a place as the most colorful literary figure of the Romantic era. His works include such classics as She Walks in Beauty, Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage and Don Juan, although the latter remained incomplete on his death.

Lord Byron is regarded as one of the greatest European poets and remains widely read and influential, both in the English speaking world and beyond. Byron’s fame rests not only on his writings but also on his life, which featured extravagant living, numerous love affairs, debts, separation, pederasty, and marital exploits. He was famously described by Lady Caroline Lamb as “mad, bad, and dangerous to know.”

Byron served as a regional leader of Italy’s revolutionary organization the Carbonari in its struggle against Austria, and later travelled to fight against the Ottoman Empire in the Greek War of Independence, for which Greeks revere him as a national hero. He died from a fever in Messolonghi.
