On this date, November 8, 1934, according to a chronology published in The Letters of Gertrude Stein and Thornton Wilder (Yale University, 1996), Stein, visiting the United States on an extensive lecture tour, flew from Chicago to New York, where she had a late evening supper at the Algonquin Hotel with her friend Bernard Faÿ, a noted French historian of Franco-American relations who had also translated into French an excerpt of Gertrude Stein’s book The Making of Americans.

GERTRUDE STEIN (1874-1946) was an American writer who spent most of her life in France, and who became a catalyst in the development of modern art and literature. Her life was marked by two primary relationships, the first with her brother Leo Stein, from 1874-1914 (Gertrude and Leo), and the second with Alice B. Toklas, from 1907 until Stein’s death in 1946 (Gertrude and Alice). Stein shared her salon at 27 rue de Fleurus, Paris, first with Leo and then with Alice. Throughout her lifetime, Stein cultivated significant tertiary relationships with well-known members of the avant garde artistic and literary world of her time. Gertrude and Leo compiled one of the earliest collections of modern art, owning early works by Pablo Picasso (who became a friend and painted her portrait), Henri Matisse, André Derain, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and other young painters. Before World War I, their salon at 27 Rue de Fleurus attracted these and other artists and members of the avant garde, including the poet, dramatist, critic, journalist Guillaume Apollinaire.
