Ulysses S. Grant Carte de Visite - 1865
Original antique carte de visite (CDV) of the great American General and soon-to-be President Ulysses S. Grant. This is one of Grant’s most recognized photographs, taken by Philadelphia photographer Frederick Gutekunst in the spring of 1865, likely within days following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination on April 15. On his left arm Grant is wearing a black mourning armband over his military uniform, tie straps hanging loose. A paper label is affixed to the verso identifying John W. Pittock, a newsboy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of 10, who eventually founded the Pittsburgh Leader newspaper, the city’s largest during the second half of the 19th Century. Measures 2½” by 4″, in very good condition.
