A beautiful and original antique engraved aquatint of President George Washington after Gilbert Stuart, etched by artist Thomas Johnson in 1903. Scarce, with only 250 having been produced. Notation on bottom border reads “Copyrighted and Published 1904 by Charles Barmore, New York.” Signed in the plate “T. Johnson 1903” and originally signed “T. Johnson” in ink below the border. Facsimile signature of George Washington. Image measures 11 ½” x 9 ¾” on a foam core backing at 19 ½” x 15 ¾” overall. Gilbert Stuart’s unfinished 1796 painting of George Washington is also known as The Athenaeum, Stuart’s most celebrated and famous work.
