Hand-addressed and signed free frank address panel, measuring approximately 5 x 3. Nelson has addressed the panel to “Right Honourable / Lord Walsingham / House of Lords,” undated; though as it was signed with his left hand, written after 1797, when his injured right arm was amputated in the Battle of Cape St. Vincent. Signed in the lower left corner of the panel, “Nelson & Bronte.” Framed with a color engraved reproduction of Lord Nelson and the quote for which he is often best known, “England expects every man will do his duty.” Scattered mild toning, otherwise fine condition. Framed in conservation glass, measures 20″ x 22″.

Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, KB (1758-1805) was a flag officer famous for his service in the Royal Navy, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was noted for his inspirational leadership and superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was wounded several times in combat, losing one arm and the sight in one eye. Of his several victories, the best known and most notable was the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, during which he was shot and killed.

Nelson’s correspondent here, Thomas de Grey, 2nd Baron Walsingham (1748-1818) was a British peer and politician. He served as Joint Postmaster General between 1787 and 1794 and was for many years Chairman of Committees in the House of Lords.
