Ink signature, “Tenzing Norgay 11/8/71,” and ballpoint signature, “Ed Hillary,” on off-white 6 x 4.5 card embossed with the seal of Wellington, New Zealand at the top. Accompanied by a 1971 letter from the secretary of the Mayor of Wellington stating: “During Tenzing Norgay’s visit an unexpected opportunity arose for us to secure his signature….” In fine condition. Also accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity certified by PSA/DNA.

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay on Mt. Everest

Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer and explorer. On 29 May 1953 at the age of 33, he and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. Following his ascent of Everest he devoted much of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts many schools and hospitals were built in this remote region of the Himalayas.

Padma Bhushan, Supradipta-Manyabara-Nepal-Tara Tenzing Norgay, GM (1914-1986) born Namgyal Wangdi and often referred to as Sherpa Tenzing, was a Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer. Among the most famous mountain climbers in history, he was one of the first two individuals known to have reached the summit of Mount Everest, which he accomplished with Edmund Hillary on 29 May 1953. He was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
