GARIBALDI, Giuseppe (1807-1882). Italian patriot and Liberator of Italy, considered one of that country’s “fathers of the fatherland.” LS, 1p. in French, 8vo, Army of the Vosges, Lyon, 10 October 1870. To an unnamed commander. Slightly soiled at the horizontal fold.

Garibaldi at this time held a command in the French Army during the Franco-Prussian War for a brief period, 1870-71. He signs as Colonel Commanding. He recommends an officer who wishes to enter Garibaldi’s command corps. If a place could be found for him, Garibaldi would be very much obliged. His circular hand stamp, as Commander of Lyon, crosses the “G” of his initial but shows as transparent. Very scarce of this period, during which Garibaldi went to France and assumed command of the Army of the Vosges, an army of volunteers, during the French Third Republic. It is also one of the most important years in Italian history, as Rome ceased to be governed by popes, becoming the capitol of a newly united Italy.
