A striking original hand-colored etching from the 1930s titled Venezia, featuring Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, by Bela Sziklay, a Hungarian artist who worked primarily in the first half of the 20th Century. Signed in the print and by hand on the mat. Print measures 10″ x 13″ matted to 12 x 17.25″. Mat shows some aging, given its age, but can easily be over-matted prior to framing. Print itself is in fine condition.

Bela Sziklay began studying art in his native Hungary, and at the age of 23 continued his studies in France. In 1934 Sziklay moved to Italy, where he specialized in etching scenes of landmarks in Venice, Florence, Rome and other locations. According to Luigi Sziklay, his father also created a portrait of Pope Pius 12 and both he and his wife were invited by the Pope to a private audience. Bela Sziklay held many sole exhibitions in Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Montecatini Terme, Venice and elsewhere. This print, Venice, is a striking example of the architectural art he created while in Italy. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco includes several Bela Sziklay etchings in its permanent collection.
