A 1958 First Day Cover signed by William Randolph Hearst Jr., featuring a 4¢ Freedom of the Press Stamp on commemorative envelope, issue date September 22, 1958 at Columbia, Missouri.

As we’ve already passed the 100th anniversary of the founding of the esteemed Columbia School of Journalism, this 1958 First Day Cover celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary of the founding of the first school of journalism in the United States. The school was founded in 1908 at the University of Missouri. The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees journalists a free press, and, appropriately, this FDC was signed by one of the country’s preeminent journalists, publisher William R. Hearst Jr. Condition Very Good, save for an small area of yellowing preceding but not materially affecting the “W” in Hearst’s signature.

William Randolph Hearst, Jr. (1908-1993) was the second son of the publisher William Randolph Hearst. He became editor-in-chief of Hearst Newspapers after the death of his father in 1951, winning a Pulitzer Prize for his interview with Soviet premier, Nikita Khrushchev, and associated commentaries in 1955.
